| Description | In 1917 the National Council of Women suggested the establishment of local Women Citizens' Associations. These associations would 'carry out an active campaign on the use and responsibility of the women's vote'. (For more information see M90/6/13/9/1) At a meeting of the Joint Committee of Oldham Women's Societies in Feb 1919 it was agreed that a Women Citizens Association be established with Marjory Lees as President. In the early 1920s it was decided to amalgamate the Oldham Women Citizens Association with the Oldham branch of the National Council of Women which had been established in Oldham in 1897. Marjory had been elected secretary for the Oldham branch of the National Council of Women in 1904 and so was an influential member of both groups. The decision to close the Oldham branch of the association was taken at the Annual General Meeting on 16 Jun 1970. |
