Description | The scrapbook has been made up from sewn manilla papers. It contains pasted-in cuttings of dialect prose and verse by Sam Fitton. The only identified newspaper is The Cotton Factory Times. The subjects of the work include 'Soapy Tum', Sammy Scrowlbant' and 'Lancashire Dialect Sketches'. Few are dated. Several pages of the scrapbook have had parts cut out, and many are crumbling at the edges. Within the scrapbook are two paper-clipped gatherings of newscuttings. One is a series by Sam Fitton in The Cotton Factory Times entitled 'My Stage Experiences' and 'My Stage Memories'. The other comprises Sam Fitton cartoons and verse published in The Co-operative News. The originals of some of these illustrations are held with the collection at FIT/1. The loose pieces include some prose and a few cartoons, but mainly poetry and dialect verse. This includes several pieces written in tribute to fellow authors, and a prize-winning verse. The newspapers include The Cotton Factory Times, Oldham Chronicle, and the Blackburn Times. Few cuttings are dated. |
