TitleCharles Edward Lees
DescriptionCharles Edward, son of Eli and Ann Lees, was born in 1840. He was educated at Old Hall a private school at Amersham, Buckinghamshire and later sent to school in both Paris and Hanover. Charles followed his father into business and by the time of his death he was director of the Manchester and County Bank, Wood and Company, Glossop and Charles Cammell and Company, (one of the largest coal and iron works in the country). These positions were in addition to him being the chairman of Eli Lees and Company, cotton manufacturers. He was also musically minded and contributed greatly to the foundation of the Royal Manchester College of Music. He was a great collector and donator of art and this can be seen in this small collection through the letters and receipts on the subject. He held numerous other philanthropic positions including treasurer for Hulme Hall Grammar School, and president of Oldham Infirmary. He married Sarah Ann Buckley in Jul 1874 and together they had two children Marjory born 1878 and Dorothy born 1876. He died on 11 Aug 1894.
