  <dc:title>Mayor</dc:title>
<dc:description>Sarah Lees was elected Mayor in 1910 and was the first female mayor in the North West and one of the first in the country. During her term in office several significant events took place including the coronation of King George V, which the Borough celebrated and the Railway strike of 1911 which included Oldham trams. When the signal that the strike had been resolved was heard in Oldham the workers threatened to stone the first tram that left the depot and so Sarah Lees as Mayor of Oldham drove the first tram out of the depot, ending the strike.

For information relating to the coronation celebrations see M90/5/4/24 and M90/5/4/30. For information relating to the railway strike see M90/5/4/26-29</dc:description>
