The greatest source is The Cotton Factory Times, containing Sam Fitton's notable regular columns Billy Blobb, Sally Butter'oth, and Rustic Ruminations by Peter Pike. The Oldham Evening Chronicle and The Co-operative News also feature. A variety of other titles include the Daily Dispatch and the Daily Mail. With some cartoons, prose and some prize-winning verse, these cuttings give a good, if possibly not comprehensive, overview of Sam Fitton's published newspaper work. There is also a smaller selection of work by his first wife Jane Fitton, sometimes writing under her pen-name 'Th'Owd Fossil' Many of the cuttings are undated. Indicated date ranges can therefore be based only on the dated pieces. Some cuttings have pencilled manuscript inscriptions, possibly in Sam Fitton's hand. |
