TitleBundle of newspaper cuttings within brown wrapping paper
DescriptionThese cuttings were found with the bulk of the collection, wrapped in brown kraft paper and tied with string. The paper has affixed an 'Askews Library Book Supply' label, addressed to 'The Librarian, Crompton Public Library'. It is dated '4/5/72', strongly suggesting a date after which these cuttings were placed in this re-used paper. The cuttings are from a variety of newspapers, including The Cotton Factory Times, the Oldham Evening Chronicle, The Co-operative News, the Daily Dispatch and the Daily Mail. The content includes verse and dialect prose, primarily under Sam Fitton's Cotton Factory Times bannerlines of Sally Butter'oth, and Rustic Ruminations by Peter Pike. There is only an occasional cartoon, but included is Fitton's front page illustration for The Cotton Factory Times, celebrating the end of World War I. Many of the cuttings were found gathered together with paper-clips. The consequent rust marks indicated that this had not been done recently. These gatherings have been retained in the following arrangement. A number of loose cuttings have now been similarly gathered together. These recent collations have been indicated in the list. Although of the cuttings are folded, and some frayed and torn, their overall condition is good to fair. An envelope of newspaper cuttings of Jane Fitton's work was found within this bundle and is listed here. Two manuscripts by Sam Fitton which were also found have been listed with his other manuscripts, as FIT/2/47 and FIT/2/48, and cross-referenced back.
