Description | Diplomatic character and subject matter have been taken as the revised basis for arranging the illustrations. Hence those drawn in pen, pencil and Indian ink have now been brought together at FIT/1/1. Within this grouping, several artificial subject categories have been created, to ease access to the large bulk. Works in water-colour media are grouped at FIT/1/2, works in oil at FIT/1/3, and printed illustrations at FIT/1/4. The previously-allocated 'SF' number codes found on the reverse of some items have been crossed through. A further nineteen original illustrations, four photographic copies of illustrations, and three other photographs were discovered at Crompton Library at a late stage in this listing. Their content and character is very similar to that part of the accumulation originally deposited. One cartoon, FIT/1/1/75/3, proved to be the missing piece from a grouping already held. These original cartoons have therefore been listed integrally with the bulk, in series FIT/1/1. The photographs have been listed within FIT/1/5. All items from this deposit are identified by the suffix (2nd deposit) after their given quantity. A grouping of five items which has a separate and identifiable provenance has been listed at FIT/1/6, while a purchased sketch-book is listed at FIT/1/7. Most of the illustrations are signed, or at least initialled, by Sam Fitton. Those which are not have been noted in the list, and placed at the end of each grouping. There are a number of illustrations whose attribution to Fitton must be uncertain, on the basis of their style. A few bear other signatures or initials. The illustrations are original drawings, unless otherwise stated in the list. Some captions are written in Lancashire dialect. Pencilled notes are found on the reverse of some illustrations. These typically include references to literary works, prices for the illustrations, and notes of sizes, perhaps as guidance for publication. These have been noted in the list only where they might provide contextual evidence. Very few of the illustrations are dated. They are in a variety of sizes, ranging from the postcard to the small poster. |
