Description | Admin History: The Henshaw's Oldham Blue Coat School Old Boys' Association was established on 19 Dec 1903 as a result of a successful reunion dinner. The dinner brought together 135 former old boys including Mr Thomas Marsden who had entered the school in the first election of pupils in 1834. Those in attendance at the dinner agreed to the idea of an ex-pupil organisation and nominated a committee to formally establish an association.
The aims of the Association were to: Promote friendship and brotherly feeling amongst those who have been educated in Henshaw's Blue Coat School, Oldham Admiration of the founder of that institution Visit recent ex-pupils to advise and encourage them in work and life outside the school Provide assistance grants as required Promote closer union between past pupils and the boys at the school by increasing the interest in Founder's Day The presentation of Past Pupils' Prizes Other similar purposes
The changes that took place with regard to the arrangement of the school in the 1950s led the association to undergo changes also. When the school became a mixed school the association's membership changed to include women as did the composition of the committee. On 8 February 1957 at a special meeting the name of the association was changed to 'Henshaw's Old Scholars Association, Oldham' to better reflect its increased membership.
Co-operation between the Old Scholars Association and the Parent-Teachers Association (established 1954) was developed and they undertook joint fund raising events at the school. Although records in the archive are patchy after 1974 it is known that by 2005 the organisation was still operating and was known as the Old Blues Association.
