DescriptionThis is a collection of letters received, with some draft replies. They have been found pasted into two guard books in date order. It is not known when this was done.

Butterworth corresponded with Edward Baines in connection with his Parish surveys, and, in his absence, with the Chief Clerk of the Leeds Mercury Office. He was also in communication with the owners of the most of the Manchester newspapers. He wrote to publishers of local gazetteers, offering to check details relating to Lancashire, and to local historians who requested information.

All incoming correspondence is either to or from Edwin Butterworth unless stated otherwise.

Edwin Butterworth died 19 April 1848. The following letters do not bear a full date and were mounted separately in this volume year. In some cases they bear no date at all.
