DescriptionThese are entitled:"Portfolio of Newspaper Fragments, relative to the History of the County Palatine of Lancaster; comprising articles upon the Antiquities of the County, such particulars of the Ancient Families of this 'notable Shire' as are conveyed in the Obituaries common to the columns of news journals, and such descriptions as appear by the same means of Churches Chapels Public Buildings Companies Societies, and the multitude of other objects claiming attention.

Extracted and arranged by Edwin Butterworth. Notices of Baptisms Marriages and Burials alone are useful for the purposes of Genealogy; but I have inserted similar notices of the modern gentry, and the modern myriads of Esquires, merely by way of reference."

At a later date Butterworth wrote: "Finding that such notices of the ordinary modern gentry would swell the portfolio an enormous magnitude as every manufacturer yeoman solicitor or monied man is now stiled an Esquire I have discontinued this plan since writing the previous lines, and I shall now only notice members of the county gentry or of the principal modern gentry."
